1st position Google in less than 72 hours… HOLY COW???

September 8, 2010  |  SEO for Small Business  |  Share

Before you think. Yeah right… another Google Ranking Myth…. stop and READ

This one is True.

I just put one of my new customers in 1st position in less than 72 hours.

Now before I tell you how amazing I am and why you should HIRE ME…. let me tell you one thing: YOU CAN DO THE SAME.

So … YOU DON’T NEED TO HIRE ME!!!! (but it will be nice if you do…)

So when can you take 1st position in less than 72 hours and how to do it?

1) The first things is to identify WHAT type of sites can achieve this:

You need to have a site that is already TRUSTED by Google. This means a site that has been indexed many times (for months or years) by Google and google has put in their “Good Books”

How do you achieve a TRUSTED level? Simple: Don’t do anything stupid….  just follow the rules.

2) The website we are going to try to rank is related to the keyword we want to rank.

mmm difficult concept isn’t? This may sound LOGICAL but for many Einsteins out there is not so clear.

So.. if you want to rank for Small dog food… your website need to be about a) Dogs or b) dog food … but not about Computer Repairs . Clear?

So so far… this may seem easy. Yes?

So let’s move on…

We are going to target a keyword that

a) has a decent search volume

b) we know we can rank in a SMART way.

…….

so how we can we do this.

Ok… let’s start by the keyword research

KEYWORD RESEARCH A LA GAB. (very quick way of doing this)

For me keyword research is all about understanding how much is worth my effort and how much profit will I obtain from a keyword that I’m working on.

Example: If I want to be 1st in Google for SEO PACKAGES … I understand the competition is going to be though but once I achieve that ranking I will be able to enjoy of traffic, leads and customers.

So in this case, we want a X amount of searches that can bring us an X amount of customers.

How many searches is a “good” value of searches?

Well… it all depends of your needs, your market and your customers.
If you sell luxury private submarines…. well, you only need 1 GOOD visitor to make 1 sell.

—> But what if only 24 people in the world look for the keyword “luxury private submarines” …

… well .. who cares? Go for it! Try to rank for that keyword… because at the end of the day, you don’t need 10.000 visitors, you just need 24 GOOD visitors to be a wealthy submarine producer .

Ok…

So now that we realize that the keyword is GOOD for us… based on the amount of searches that has per month.. we move to the difficulty of the keyword

Difficulty keyword Research

So when you see internet marketers and SEO professionals talking about how “good they are” the usually claim the following:

Look at me, my site is 1st with 187.019 competitive sites…. mainly based on this graph.

But the reality is that the amount of results means nothing.

How many people like to go running in the mornings?

For sure more than a million.

How many of THAT people are planning to go on the next Olympics?

For sure less than 20…

So what we need to do is FIND is the 1st position for OUR keyword is in fact link building for THAT keyword….

That’s all…

We want to know why they are ranking for that keyword…. and if we discover they are ranking for that keyword, because there is nothing out there better..  then we know life is waiting for us to get that 1st position in Google in less than 72 hours.

So how to detect a weak competitor. (A la Gab)

This takes me 3 minutes to do… and is the most basic competitor analysis you can do.

The first thing is to consider is the Google Page Rank of the site that is in first position for the keyword we want to rank.

Yes… I know… I know… google Page Rank doesn’t determine google ranking. But a high Pagerank tells me a lot about a site.
A website with a Google Page rank 5 is not a “new site”… is not a site designed by an amateur and I expect is going to have authority links….

Once we see the page rank… we move to the site itself.

Is it a big site? or a small site?  how many pages? how often they update their content…?

What we want to identify is:… How serious is this website about the KEYWORD we want to rank . This step is 100% non scientific is jut to get the “feeling” about the site. You need to BELIEVE your site has better content and is overall better than the site you are going to try to outrank (call this: emotional training before the ranking process).

Once we look at the overall feeling of the site, let’s look at the onsite-SEO points:

* Has the site been properly optimizes?

* Does the domain name has the keyword in the url?

* Does the page has the keyword in the title?

* Does the website has the keyword in the CONTENT?

Overall you don’t need to be an SEO Ninja to detect this points, remember we just want to know … “are they trying to rank or not”

The Next Step

Obviously the idea of this long and boring post is to talk about what to do when we detect the 1st place in Google is in 1st position, because … mmm… Google coudn’t find anything better to put there.

So then we know is our turn to understand a bit about the “link strategy” of number 1…

Finding their Linking strategy.

This may sound complicate but is pretty easy… just find their links, read their links and understand what they are doing

How do we find the links?

By using http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

Siteexplorer simply points the backlinks to a site… and once you know the backlinks to a site you can understand their link building philosophy.

What we want to do is to determine if they are in fact link building properly or not.

We want to find their links…. but more important that their links , the type of links they use.

Example: a site with poor link building will have some link exchange links, and directories links.

A site with a smart link building strategy will have blog comments, funnel sites links, Press Release and high PR anchor links.

The funny thing is that many many sites have in fact poor links… links that are just BULK… links that are EASY to outrank.

Outranking them

The outranking is easy:

Send 5 – 1o authority links to your page.

We want to send: Anchor text links from authority sites to our home page.

Our strategy is: Instead of many small dogs… we arrive with 5 to 10 big dogs. No need for quantity. We have quality

That’s it.

Did you expected anything more?

mmm let’s go a bit slower.

What you want to do is position your links in Authority sites.
These links will be contextual links (inside the text) and obviously the links need to be Do-follow.

So how do we find this authority sites/links?

Well…  use your conventional SEO/Link building Brain and go a bit further.

Let’s say that you know you can use Article Marketing for link building..

What about if you do PAID Guest Posting in a niche related blog to appear as a feature article?

What about if you use a PAID press Release service and send a PAID PR with our anchor text to Google News?

What about if you upgrade a listing in a niche related directory and paid to be featured in the home page.

You get the idea? Normal links just became… Ninja Links. Just what we need.

Conclusion

Can you do this with any site? The answer is no… but you can apply the same dynamics for longer strategies

Can you expect to find easy keywords to rank ? … if you are looking in Australia, the answer is yes. There are so many keywords up for grabs is crazy

Do I believe paying for authority links is ethical? Yes . Depending on the type of links. (Example: Yahoo Directory)

Is that it? No… once you achieve first position… keep link building until… once you finish link building (start again)

So after 1389 words… if you have any questions… please post a comment.

  1. Hey I like this article. I just wanted to point out that many SEOs will intentionally create a bulk of weak links, like directories, to make it harder for competitors to analyse their backlink strategy. If you have to look through thousands of links to figure out where the high quality links are coming from you are more likely to give up. It’s a kind of masking strategy.

  2. Hi Gab,

I’m trying a little experiment of my own trying to rank a page on a random topic very quickly, which you may have seen on a flying solo post.

Given my blog is quite new and isn’t that strong yet, I’m not sure if I will succeed, as your advice above is actually far more solid than what I’m playing around with – the difference though is that the keyword in my experiment is not competitive. I’m definately not paying for links etc for this for fun thing, but I think some tactics like this can be required in certain circumstances.

  7. Great advice, building strong one-way DoFollow backlinks can save you a lot of time instead of building many small and almost useless links.

Also, as stated above, in Googles search results. I had a website which topped the results for “serious reviews” within 2 days as well. Even though it has millions results it doesn’t matter since it’s a low competitive keyword. However I deleted the site but someone else bought the domain name which is still at the top without any content atm.

  9. Thanks. I thought the results in Google were actually the number of pages I would be competing against so I could never find any keywords to compete against LOL.
Thanks for clarifying how this really works.
