App Store Optimization – Steps To Rank High At the App Stores

So this is a new topic that moves away from SEO but for sure will be extremely relevant in a few years time… ;)

These days, you cannot think of promoting your Smartphone, iPad apps without using app store optimization. All iPhone, tables or smartphone users fire up apps to fulfill their needs. On opening the app store, you will be flooded with millions of apps.

All Smartphone users search for apps that meet their specific needs. So, they visit the app stores like Android marketplace or iTunes app store to search for what they need.

Just the overwhelming numbers of apps can leave them confused. (It took me yesterday over 15 minutes to find one app!)

So how does the user find an app? mainly the user will use certain search terms to search the apps they need. With the help of ASO you can make your app appear in the fist page of their search results. The strategies of app store optimization are meant for deriving high-rankings for your apps.

Sounds familiar?

Achieving high rankings is not that easy, especially because of the sheer numbers of apps that are being sold at the stores. However, you can probably increase your chances it with a few good ASO practices.

App store optimization for high rankings:

Keywords:

Relevant keywords must be used along with the description of the App itself. The app name must have the keywords present, if possible.  Other places to mention your keywords are company name, app description and image titles. There should be no commas or spaces in the keywords.

There are ASO keyword estimator tools that will give you a good idea about which keywords to use. When you select your target keywords, it makes a lot of sense to use them in both their singular and plural versions.

For instance searches are different for ‘holiday’ and ‘holidays’, but if you select the plural version ‘holidays’, then the singular might also get considered by the store search engines. However, it is better to apply both versions (singular and plural) in your content.

Description:

Description of your app is very vital in app store optimization. Description should be short, catchy, and clear. In addition, the necessary keywords must be present while describing different functions of the app.

Screen shots:

Select striking and eye-catching segments of the app, because many users prefer to quickly look at the screenshots, and decide on their download or purchases.

Icon:

The face of your app is the icon. You can say that it is the grand ambassador of your app.

Video:

Post a high-defined video of your app along with its description. This will build up the user’s confidence about the app’s worthiness. Once your video catches attention in video sharing websites, then it starts climbing the rankings, consequently topping the list on the app stores.

And the list goes on and on an on….

  1. Is ASO practices not that hard to do, or is it just the same with website optimization?
    I was just wondering here.

    Hey Nina
Is a bit more holistic approach, more factors to consider that are not “just” based on one source like Google.
Example, increasing downloads, reviews, different type of optimization depending on the market you target, etc.

  2. Some developers think that after loading an app to the store, people will automatically find it and load. But that’s not tru. There are millions of apps there. And lots of them have the alike functions. So, these tips are a must to follow!
