Focus in what works… and keep rinsing : SEO and Link Building

I love when people spend hours in SEO forums talking about …
“what Google will change in the future…”

“what will be Google next move towards SEO, towards the way the algorithm ranks sites, etc….

“Be Aware google is not happy with SEO guys…!”

“did you see the latest Matt Cutts video blog?”

“Ohhhh god…. fear… stress…. now Google will really change.”

Because…

“Google will ditch Article Marketing”
“Google will ditch Page Rank”
“Google will ditch blog comments.”
“Google will really ditch auto-blogs”
“Google will now really detect quality content…”

and off course… the best one

“SEO is dead”

Yep…. I heard all that before.

Regardless the conspiracy theories… regardless what YOU think Google will do, the fact is that you can’t change what Google will do or not.
So the best option is to SAVE ENERGY and Focus your efforts in what works.

Yep. I said it. I can’t live my life based on what Google is thinking of doing, or if Google likes or not my way of doing SEO or link building.

At the end… if it works for you and you think is ethical enough, just stop talking about it and do it.

Simple….

The problem with SEO is that we think about this cr*p just to much….

I have seen people watching over 200 videos in my SEO Training site and then when I talk to them, weeks after, they confess to me, they know about SEO, but they haven’t started doing link building or optimizing their site.

Instead we spend time in Twitter, in Facebook, in Forums talking about “The new trends in SEO”….  we spend our time increasing our “post” count in social networks instead of increasing our links and our keyword authority.

Because we like it or not, we are time wasters, we love to spend time in non-productive activities and deep inside we know link building sucks big time, therefor we prefer to talk about it, instead of doing it.

I hate link building… oh my god….  I really hate it, but because I hate it so much, I have decided to invest my time finding exactly what works and what doesn’t work, so I can spend less time doing it and more time playing GiJoe, Lego and Wii with my 2 boys. (Although Dominic is just 18 months and he can’t really play Wii … just yet…)

That’s why it’s important to analyze what works for you, that’s why you need to track what you have done and be able to record the results.

Your site is your own lab bunny and you are the only one that can really understand what is working for you.

Is Article Marketing working for you?

If  is not, then try to understand why.

may be you only sent 2, 3 articles in the last year , mainly because you are lazy …

may be your niche is very competitive and low level article links are not going to increase

But before you hit forums and try to “buy SEO software” think a bit before you jump into conclusions…  this means: learn from your experience, analyze your SEO behavior, your data, your own stats and your own link building strategy.

So… find something that really works… and become an expert… spend time improving your own techniques and stop thinking about “what will happen in 2 years time” .

In SEO, 1 year is 100 years… and in 1 week all the answers to your questions may change.

I agree with you that you should not over-analyze every little aspect of seo, doing so will only keep you back. I suppose that the main reason people are concerned about seo changing over time is because some are investing a lot of money in it and they don’t want it to only last a month or two.

When I start a website I do some seo analyzes after about 2 weeks on the site and then I try to fix all the errors the reports found. After that I just build links and add content, nothing more. But at least I get something done and it seems to be working well so far.

I agree with your thoughts. Just do all your SEO efforts and at the end, you’ll also reap the benefits of it.

  4. Hi Gabriel,
I really like this post. The main problem is that SEO is a very complex approach and to do this well you need to learn a lot of right stuff. What Google did up to date is common sense. Less spam and more quality content. The Big Players are still at the top forever. Yep. But small business owners have to pay (I mean PPC ads) to keep some level of traffic. The point is if you want organic web traffic you have to work very hard. SEO isn’t 1 month strategy.

For me I think SEO is hard to analyze, it’s evolving from time to time. Google as a search engine is really hard to read, their algorithm can’t be dismantle easily. But I heard as of late, don’t know if this is true but they say Google is ditching Page Ranks.
