Sydney Railway Sleepers and why Railway Sleepers are better than chocolate.

How does SEO relates to Sydney Railway Sleepers? Well, I’m glad you are reading this article (with a stupid title) to understand more about my relation with Sydney Railway Sleepers.

To start let me explain the reason of this bizzzzzare post.

A few days ago I got an email of one of the readers/users of my SEO training Course.

This is a small part of the email

By the way, how about you do a video on a real life example of one client and you follow through
some strategies you would usually go about? This could be lengthy, but I dont know anyone who
has done a video like that.. I mean really, from the beginning to the end – no shortcuts! The problem in learning
SEO is that the usual ebooks are all about theory! A REAL example by visually “seeing” of how it is
being done is by far more valuable.. I guess lots of other people in your member area would be
‘keen on that. Just one suggestion,… :)

My reply was not very positive, I explained that I don’t believe in showing my customers websites? Why is that… well, let’s think about this:
This is my life . I do this every day and my family future depends on the ranking of my customers. (As simple as that).
If I go out there and show every single way I do link building… I’m providing my competitors the clues and the strategy that I use for link building and for ranking.
So how does this relates with Sydney Railway Sleepers? Well…

A few months ago, in Flyingsolo.com  a fellow SEO consultant, praised the ranking of one of his customers sites for the keyword Sydney Railway Sleepers.
After visiting the site, I noticed that the site was ranking for “Osmosis” or for absolute lack of competitors in the arena.

Do you get it?

By announcing your great ranking you are allowing people like me to test the real ranking capacity of your website for X keyword.
In theory this is not a big deal… because I really can’t care less about THAT keyword and mainly it is a niche keyword with a low market potential.
But … but…

Yesterday I found a post of my fellow friend and future SEO Ninja , Matt Cummins from Brand Police.
Matt decided to rank for the same keyword and posted an interesting post about
Railway Sleepers trying to trigger some natural ranking.

Can I beat Matt in his task of Ranking for Railway Sleepers?

Well… I really hope so.

But in this case, I have decided to do something different…. I want to explain how I will out rank Matt and how I will achieve top position for this longtail.

The first thing is to understand the real competition that the keyword represent
and in this case I want to analyze the top results in Google, focusing in the 1st position.

The first position is the TARGET website, and by Target is the site we want to outrank. It doesn’t really matter what site is in position 7th or 5th of 2th… if we can’t outrank the 1st page… is better to quit now.
So the 1st result if a site with the following data:
Page Rank 2.
5 Pages Indexed in Google
11 Backlinks…. (yep! just 11 backlinks)
Domain name registered in April 2008
No sitemap
Regarding the site itself… there is a serious lack of content, very poor optimization, poor way of setting up Titles….

Mmm in a few words: This looks Easy.
So how to outrank a website about Railway Sleepers when my site has nothing to do with Railway Sleepers… ?

well the first thing is to create some content about this… and because so far this article is 610 words, I’m going to give google what Google loves: Content … and I will be adding some extra juicy content about sleepers and expect to reach 1200 to 2000 words.

Remember: There is no serious content about this keyword on any of my competitors websites and I really want to setup up the game and have more content than Matt.

The next step is to slightly stuff the page with the keyword… and the reason why I say slightly is because I expect to get comments in this post so the comments will increase the content and the % of keyword stuffing will decrease.

Then I want to Google to really notice my website… so I will just do it in the best way possible: Bookmark.

Bookmark is just a way of saying to the Big Google: Look at me mate! People are digging my content .
But obviously lovely content and just some silly bookmarks is not enough…. specially because I know there are other evil SEO experts doing link building out there… so I will start with the easiest thing: Article Marketing.

My strategy will be pretty easy: Submit 4 to 5 articles to EnzineArticles and once these articles get approved I will submit them to Goarticles.
Once the process is finish… I will spin the articles and submit them to low level article directories.

The objective is:
Bulk Links.

Am I looking for quality Links?
I don’t think so…….

I’m just creating more links faster than my competitors….

Will I be link building too fast? No… because my site has already enough backlinks… over 2900 backlinks… so creating a bunch of 80 to 90 backlinks is not a HUGE deal…. also let’s remember that the if you link building to fast FEAR, is just when you do it in a HIGH SPEED LINK BUILDING WAY (example 3000 links in 48 hours ) .

Then what?
Well, I expect to create some 4 of 5 backlinks from Hugpages, Infobarrel and may be Squidoo… (even if deep inside I hate squidoo).
Then…. well, we just wait…. ;) (We just wait for Matt to send me an email saying “You Won!) (I hope so!)

Advantages of Sydney Wooden Railway Sleepers

One of the stepping stones of development in the world was the railways sleepers. They have been around for more that 150 years now. They have been made of many kinds of materials like plastic and steel. Yet over time one of the most commonly used materials for making railway sleepers is wood. Even today of the many types of materials used for sleepers, over 2.5 billion are wooden materials. Beech wood and oak wood are most preferred for this purpose. However in places where these specific trees are not found in abundance, any hardwood tree is used. And in places where you do not find much hardwood, pine is used.

In case you are wondering why wooden sleepers have dominated the world of railways then you obviously need to know that wood actually have a number of advantages over other materials. The biggest of all those advantages is the adaptable nature of wood.
The wooden sleepers can be used on tracks of varying widths. At the same time it can be used on tracks meant for heavy as well as light load. In fact wood is most suitable for the tracks which are really long and yet at the same time it is suitable for tracks which are quite short.

Another typical feature of wood is that is indeed one of the best insulators of sound and electricity that can be found around. That is why they are recommended for underground tunnels as well as residential areas. Yet that is not all. There is another point that wood scores. Wood is a renewable material of nature. This makes it a good choice for those who are very conscious of the environmental problems. And the more that time passes wood get more entrenched in the soil, making it difficult to be derailed. Obviously there is no doubt that Sydney railway sleepers have many advantages. ;)

U have to love it!

Update Saturday 23th
It seems that now I’m in position 9th for Google Australia. My articles have been indexed already and it seems the bookmarks provided a bit extra gravy for the related Railway Sleeper keyword.

Overall pretty happy, but I’m pretty sure I can still be in 1st position in 4 to 5 weeks…

=========================

Update Satuday 25th

Ok, so now we are in position 3rth… time spend overall? may be 30 minutes.
Worth the effort? Yes…. but only for the purpose of this SEO experiment, obviously I don’t have any serious interested in Railway Sleepers or in buying a Sleeper in Sydney… but it seems my little experiment is showing people that Ranking is not ROCKET SCIENCE…  is just setting yourself some goals and working towards ranking. That’s it.

To the owner of Statewide  Sleepers ? (the 1st position for this keyword) … mm I’m sorry, but I think you will be outranked pretty soon. Nothing personal .

What i understand from this post is that if you want to rank well on a keyword you have to create backlinks and be quite active in my niche related sites.
So the more links you got the higher rank you get..

I agree with you. Building a link to get indexed by google, have to use special ways. Such as submit articles, submit website and others. But, what is important is the selection of keywords and all the content in the website does not violate the rules of google. Although there may be a little difficult to first page of google, but nothing is impossible. As we know many other people cheating in building links, but you should still do what you think is good.

The title is not so relevant because I want to make it a bit more natural and I also want people to click….

How do I create links faster… simply by taking action! Instead of thinking so much about the challenge, I decided to go for it and try to win it…

    Hi Gab,
Will be interesting to see how you go, and I suspect you will do very well!

Where the origional challenge came from was as experiement of how well I could do WITHOUT linkbuilding. If we are doing linkbuilding now, I think i’ll have another crack if I can find some time, will be fun!

    Hi Gab,
I believe G has just implemented an algo shift in the last few weeks that for the first time has your and Matt’s pages move to #1 and 2. for “railway sleepers Sydney”. You were around 6 and Matt around 12.

The question to be answered is what is the algo change? If you change the search to: “Sydney railway sleepers” this page and Matts are back around their old positions.

    Any ideas?

John, I used some of the old links to point to a different source.
Also I believe Matt site hasn’t update in a while, so his post still links from the main site.

but I haven’t look at data regarding the latest algo change…. I haven’t see any drop in ranking/traffic, in fact the “freshness algorithm” seems to have help me in this tiny blog.

    Hi Gab,
I initally thought “freshness” but that does not explain the different rankings with “Sydney” at the front or back of the search phrase.

I don’t know how your ordered your link text but this page’s title goes for, “Sydney railway sleepers” – which is not the phrase you rank best for.

Today I find that Matt’s page has dropped down to #6 from #2 when I posted my comment.

I’m starting to think that G’s “freshness” ranking factor also has a transience factor in it. That would make a lot of sense when you think about the transience of many external links these days.

    Regs,
    JohnW
