Using Hubpages, Squidoo and WordPress.com to create backlinks to your site
Hey guys a quick (mmm well, not so quick) guide about Squidoo, Hubpages and WordPress.com … as we all know creating backlinks to your website is a highly effective way of bringing your site to the attention of visitors and obviously… Google!
As we already know, backlinks are simply links to your website from another site. They are an important tool for increasing the popularity of your site. As well as directing readers to your website, backlinks can help to increase the visibility of your website to people who are searching for relevant keywords online. The more links there are to your site, the higher rank it will receive in search listings. (I know you already know this… but I just want to go explain each step…)
As you may already guess, it is very easy to create a backlink, but if you want your site to be highly placed for a competitive keyword in search engine rankings, then you will need either thousands of backlinks or enough authority link to outrank your competitor.
These backlinks can be placed anywhere online… is your choice… but some good options for places to create backlinks are hubpages, squidoo and wordpress. All three of these sites allow you to create your own online content for free and permit you to insert links to your website. As well as inserting links into your own webpage on these sites, you may also insert backlinks into comments you make on other people’s blogs, hubs or lenses.
Hubpages is a website on which people can publish hubs or pages to provide information about specific subjects. You can create backlinks on Hubpages by writing a hub that is relevant to your website and inserting a link to your website onto your hub.
This video is from my SEO course website.
Creating a hub is very easy. Hubpages provides a range of useful tools that can help you to create your own hub. The HubTool guides you through the process of creating your hub, from writing a summary of what your page will be about to creating a list of relevant search tags. When you put together your hub, you will be offered a choice of capsules or modules to be included in your hub. The basis of most hubs will be text, but you can also add photos, videos and other types of content in different types of module. Each capsule can contain a particular type of content, from text, photos and videos to an RSS feed or adverts.
Hubpages is a site that is dedicated to providing informative content. If you are going to create a successful hub, then you will need to provide interesting content that provides useful facts for the reader. You are advised by Hubpages to choose a topic on which you can write in-depth rather than trying to provide a broad overview that contains information that is readily available in many other places online. Unique, original material will tend to fare best on Hubpages. You are allowed to publish other sorts of writing on Hubpages, but it is unlikely to generate much interest. Creating a popular hub will help to increase the power of the backlinks you create since links placed on more popular sites will be more effective at raising your website in the search rankings.
The Hubpages system is designed to maximize the amount of revenue that you can generate from your hub. For example, it offers you the chance to link your Hubpages account with affiliate programs in order to earn income from it. The Hubpages Learning Center offers some useful tips and advice on the creation of your hub, and you can also approach the community of Hubpages writers if you have and questions.
One important benefit of using Hubpages as a site on which to place links is that you will not need to create too much content. The most successful hubs are usually are more aimed to quality… than lenght, so it is not necessary to write too much. However, you should avoid adding too many links to your site on your hub as it may be considered to be spam. This could result in your hub being deleted.
Squidoo is another site on which you can post content. It is very similar to Hubpages, but the pages that you create on Squidoo are known as lenses. A lens is a webpage that contains an overview of a particular subject. They are called lenses because, like the lens of a camera, they allow you to focus on a specific topic. You can write a lens about anything you choose, so you can select any topic that relates to the website you are promoting.
Squidoo provides you with various different options for creating a lens, including different colors and themes. The Lens Wizard provided by Squidoo offer guidance for the creation of a successful lens. Squidoo and the Squidoo community can provide advice on creating a successful lens.
Each lens consists of a series of modules. A particular type of content can be placed in each module. Modules can contain text, images or other content such as an RSS feed. Building a lens is very easy and it is also simple to update and edit our lens afterwards.
You can post adverts on your Squidoo lens, or use your lens in order to direct people to your own website, but this site is a bit less focused on revenue generation than Hubpages. Many people create their lenses just because it allows them to share their interests or choose to donate any proceeds from their lens to charity.
Another difference between Squidoo and Hubpages is that longer lenses are often more successful on Squidoo. This is because the larger lenses on Squidoo tend to attract the most attention. It can work better to create a single longer lens, with perhaps two links to your website in it, rather than to create a number of smaller ones. Creating a lens on Squidoo can therefore take more effort than building a hub on Hubpages. However, it is possible to place multiple backlinks on your lens, without being accused of posting spam as you may be on Hubpages.

WordPress is a free site on which you can create your own blog. You can blog about anything that interests you, so it is possible to write about your website or to cover relevant topics in order to include links to the site.
In order to create your own blog, you need to sign up for a WordPress account. You will then be able to choose from a selection of different layouts and designs in order to personalize your blog, and begin posting.
Once you have created your blog you will be able to add new blog posts whenever you like. You can write these posts about anything and you may update regularly or rarely, depending on what you want your blog to do. The most successful blogs will be updated regularly, but if you just want to add in a few backlinks then you will not need to continue providing up-to-date content. Many blogs are very personal. Unlike the pages on Hubpages and Squidoo, you will not be expected to provide informative content. The rules governing the use of WordPress are less strict about content than those on Hubpages and Squidoo. This can make it easier to write a WordPress blog since you will not be expected to create something that complies with the website’s standards.
There are still some rules that govern what you can and can’t do with your WordPress blog, however. You may not, for example, post links to affiliate programs or use your blog to place adverts in order to generate revenue. You can mention your website and direct people towards it, however, so if you are interesting in posting backlinks, a WordPress blog can be very useful.
You can add images and videos to your WordPress blog posts. There are also a range of features and widgets that you can place on your blog, including links to your Twitter and Flikr accounts.
WordPress is very easy to use and once you have created your blogging account, adding new posts will be incredibly quick and easy. Your posts can be as short as you like and they can relate to anything, whether or not it is considered informative. You can even discuss your own personal opinions.
The WordPress community consists of numerous bloggers, many of whom can be helpful in promoting your blog and your website. You may be able to find other blogs that cover similar topics to yours form an agreement with their owners to place a backlink on their blog too. The WordPress community can also provide advice to help you create a successful blog.
Hubpages, Squidoo and WordPress.com are three sites on which you can place backlinks for your website. Each of these sites provides a simple way in which to create your own content. It is easy to create and maintain a number of different blogs, hubs and lenses covering subjects that are related to your website. Backlinks can then be placed in these pages in order to attract people who may be interested in the site and to raise your site in the search rankings.
Backlinks work best when they are placed on webpages that are higher in the search rankings than the site which you are promoting therefore it is a good idea to put some effort into developing a good hub, lens or blog.

Thank you for the informative article Gabriel. I see you rank #2 for the search term “seo consultants”. A ranking most so called experts would love to have. Look forward to reading future posts.

Hmmm… I don’t know… These hubs sound almost like creating a separate site and writing content for it. Yes you get links, but so much wasted time, I think it will be better if I spend it writing content for my own site, not for theirs :/

Who talks about “writing it yourself” … outsource content for link building mate…

Hi Gab,
Wow, you sure are being hard on the spammers in the comments here! Like I mean “pass” and “fareed” didn’t even make an effort, but poor Peter at least wrote something half relevant!
Without wanting to sound like a “thanks for the post” comment myself, I actually really learnt something here and did want to thank you as i’m been meaning to get more stuck into both Hubpages and Squidoo for a while. I’ve created content on both before, but haven’t really had a good crack at getting it right. I’ll admit that i’ve created a number of small lenses before rather than one big one, so i’ve noted your point re longer lenses being more successful.
Overall though, would you say the extra link possibilities with Squidoo makes it’s a more valuable tool than hub pages? Or is it just a case of keeping the variety of backlinks happening?
Matt
(PS: Check out my latest blog – i’ve noticed you don’t have a Gravatar and you should get one!)

Hi Gabriel,
I’ve been using Squidoo and Hubpages accounts for some years now and its surprising how well they have stood up and given some real link juice to sites I worked on.
One tip for your readers though – try to get those lenses and hubpages some backlinks of their own, maybe a few links from wordpress, blogger, ezinearticles etc. I’ve found getting them some pagerank makes them much more useful.

Hi Aidan… yes mate 100% right, I can’t believe I forgot to talk about that. Link building to the hub or lens… brings PR to that page way faster than in a “normal site”….

Gabriel, You have provided an unbelievable resource for many of us that had given up on our Squidoo, hubpage, and wordpress sites. Squidoo, more than the others, had not provided any backlinks from others or even the links that I had submitted(according to Webmaster tools). I included my wordpress blog link, in case you get a chance to check it out! I dont have much content yet but I am going right now and link my squidoo and hub pages to my blog and see what happens! I really appreciate your help with this and if there is anything I can do for you, please dont hesitate to ask!

Hi Gabriel, Thats a great article. I have in addition a question. When you do SEO for your clients and you create your hubs and lenses, do you always create new accounts, or do you sinply register for Squidoo and Hub pages only once? I have also been thinking, when I register, should I use my real name or a fake once, in case somebody is trying to track down my linkbuiding? Could you give me some advice Gab? Sorry if these questions may sound kinda silly
Ta.

Good question Wending. In fact… very smart… I use random accounts and accounts I can control in case the SEO strategy changes. My clients don’t care about controlling the hubs and the lenses…
I use my accounts because their author accounts already have page rank, and some previous google love… so they look and pass as legit lenses and hubs…

I’ve used both HubPages and Squido before. They did suffer a bit in the Google updates but they still seem good but I have never used WordPress except to as a blog platform. What about Blogger, does that have any value?

Hi gab, Thank for the article. Im currenty using wp is the manner. Im wondering if the trouble of gaining page rank and authority on subdomains is worth it, or doing it on a stand alone domain maybe more of a wise long term investment. Apart from the fact it’s free, are there any other advantages?

Squidoo and Hubpages are two great Web 2.0 properties that are very effective in generating traffic to your website and passing on link juice to your site. However, these two sites have become highly selective in terms of content today.
